Tessa Thompson will receive the Spotlight Tribute at the 35th Annual Gotham Film Awards, recognizing her fearless performance in Hedda, the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios drama. Directed and written by Nia DaCosta, the film showcases Thompson’s bold interpretation of one of dramatic literature’s most complex characters. The ceremony will take place on December 1, 2025, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
Reimagining a Classic with Bold Vision
In this daring adaptation, DaCosta reimagines Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler in 1950s England. Thompson steps into the role of Hedda, a newlywed simmering with discontent. She and her husband George (Tom Bateman) host a lavish party they can’t afford, which quickly becomes the backdrop for Hedda’s emotional unraveling.
As the evening unfolds, Hedda manipulates her guests in a ruthless game of lust, jealousy, and betrayal. Her longing for a past love, embodied by a brilliant author (Nina Hoss) who competes with George for an academic post, adds further tension. Moreover, Imogen Poots and Nicholas Pinnock round out the cast, while Thompson also serves as a producer, deepening her creative imprint on the film.
Gotham Applauds Thompson’s Performance
Meanwhile, the Gotham Film & Media Institute has praised Thompson’s portrayal with high regard. Executive Director Jeffrey Sharp described her performance as “fearless and revelatory,” emphasizing how she “deepens one of dramatic literature’s most complex characters and brings her into new focus for the audience that we represent here at The Gothams.”
With this honor, Thompson joins a prestigious group of past recipients, including Zendaya, who received the Spotlight Tribute last year for Challengers.
What’s Next for Hedda
Following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last month, Hedda begins its theatrical rollout this Wednesday. Shortly after, audiences can stream the film on Prime Video starting October 29, 2025. Thanks to its daring storytelling and Thompson’s magnetic presence, Hedda is already gaining momentum as a major awards season contender.
In addition to Thompson’s recognition, the Gotham Awards will also honor Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein with the Vanguard Tribute and celebrate the cast of Sinners with the Ensemble Tribute. Furthermore, organizers will announce this year’s nominees on October 28.
