Nollywood star Ruth Kadiri has opened up about her remarkable journey into the world of acting and screenwriting, revealing how a single moment at the National Theatre changed the course of her life. In a candid interview on Jay On Air TV, Kadiri reflected on her humble beginnings, her passion for storytelling, and the unexpected opportunity that launched her career.
From the Slum to the Stage
Kadiri began by sharing the challenges she faced growing up in the slum, describing how difficult it was to break into the entertainment industry. Driven by her love for acting, she made her way to the National Theatre, hoping to land a role. Meanwhile, upon arrival, she was overwhelmed by the massive crowd, over a thousand aspiring actors for the same opportunity.
Feeling intimidated and discouraged, she noticed a sign about screenwriting and followed a sudden instinct to explore it. Kadiri shared “I think maybe it was God,” recalling how she walked into the office without knowing what to expect.
A Chance Encounter That Changed Everything
Inside the office, Kadiri met a man who was teaching screenwriting to three students. They were waiting for a fourth who hadn’t shown up. When she asked to join, he initially told her she had to pay. Kadiri, who didn’t even have transport fare to get home, explained her situation. Moved by her determination, the man allowed her to join the class for free and taught her the basics of screenwriting.
That moment, she said, became the foundation of her entire career. “Doing that basic literally got me to where I am today,” Kadiri shared.
Her First Script Becomes a Hit
Her very first script was met with skepticism by the producer, who didn’t believe in her talent. However, he sent the script to several actors, including Tonto Dike and Uche Jombo. Tonto Dike, in particular, kept praising the script, which eventually convinced the producer to move forward with the project.
Kadiri didn’t ask for payment, she simply wanted a small role in the film. When the producer agreed to shoot it, she was overjoyed. The film turned out to be a hit, and so did the next one. “That’s how it just started,” she said, reflecting on the moment her dreams began to take shape.
A Testament to Passion and Persistence
Ruth Kadiri’s story is a powerful reminder that sometimes, the path to success begins with a detour. Her journey from aspiring actress to celebrated screenwriter and producer is a testament to resilience, faith, and the importance of seizing unexpected opportunities.
