Netflix will release “The Thursday Murder Club” on August 28, 2025, an adaptation of Richard Osman’s bestselling mystery novel to screens with an exceptional ensemble cast and Chris Columbus as the director.
The film features four retirees as they form an amateur detective group, solving old cases in their spare time. Helen Mirren stars as Elizabeth, a former intelligence operative who leads the amateur detective group, Pierce Brosnan plays Ron, a retired trade union activist, while Ben Kingsley portrays Ibrahim, a former psychiatrist and Celia Imrie completes the group as Joyce, a kind-hearted and compassionate retired nurse.
With each actor bringing decades of acclaimed performances to their roles in this character-driven mystery.
The story centres on these four friends whose hobby of solving historical murders becomes urgent when a property developer is found dead in their community, drawing them into their first active investigation.
Chris Columbus, known for directing “Home Alone,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and the first two “Harry Potter” films, took over as writer, co-producer, and director in April 2024. Columbus brings extensive experience with ensemble casts and multigenerational storytelling to this adaptation.
The story balances mystery elements with character development, showcasing how each member’s professional background—from espionage to psychology—contributes to their investigative approach.
The recently released trailer demonstrates the film’s balance of suspense and humour while highlighting the cast’s chemistry and the retirement community setting.
The film will have a limited theatrical release in the UK beginning August 22, followed by its global Netflix debut on August 28.
