Nollywood actress Regina Chukwu opens up about losing her husband to Tuberculosis after just three years of marriage.
She shared in an interview with Biola Bayo that she got married young, in her early 20s, while still in school.
Regina Chukwu met her late husband soon after completing secondary school; he was from Anambra.
The actress revealed that her late husband’s tuberculosis stemmed from internal injuries sustained in a past accident.
Regina Chukwu also shared that her husband’s health declined rapidly after their second child’s birth. In desperation, she took him to his village for treatment at a local health center.
She revealed that in extreme pain, he once begged her to end his suffering with a “death injection”.
The actress revealed that despite his family’s efforts, he passed away at the age of 28 years old.
“…I saw my father-in-law dragging him. He was dragging him with his two hands. All he said to me was ‘he is dead’.
I was furious that I passed out and woke up the next day. I could not say goodbye to him,”
“He was already buried. So, when we finished the burial and everything, his sister said, there is no need for me to return to Lagos. They would rent an apartment or start a business for me in Enugu city.”
The actress explained that, according to her husband’s family tradition, she remains their wife unless her dowry is returned and also that her first child was taken from her based on this custom.
“I’m still their wife. I didn’t get a divorce. If I get a divorce, and if I have a husband and he returns their dowry, then I am no longer a wife there.
“As you see today, God forbid, if anything happens to me.
So that’s the tradition.” She said
Chukwu has featured in several films such as ‘Okomi Ale Mi’, ‘Encounter’, ‘Setemi’, ‘Akun’, ‘Awolu at Awalu’, ‘Ewatomi’, ‘Idaho’, and ‘Ogunso’.
In 2022, the actress revealed she is ready to date again.
