Jon M. Chu to direct live-action ‘Hot Wheels’ film with Mattel, Warner Bros., and Bad Robot.
The live-action Hot Wheels film is an action-packed thrill ride featuring high-performance vehicles inspired by the iconic toy car line.
While plot details remain under wraps, the project brings together Jon M. Chu, Warner Bros., and Bad Robot, who are currently collaborating on the animated Dr. Seuss adaptation, Oh, the Places You’ll Go!
Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier will pen the script for the live-action Hot Wheels film. The project will be produced by Robbie Brenner for Mattel Studios, J.J. Abrams and Michael Bostick for Bad Robot, and Jon M. Chu for Electric Somewhere, with oversight from Sheila Walcott and Zach Hamby for Warner Bros., Jon Cohen for Bad Robot, Jane Lee for Electric Somewhere, and Arturo Thur de Koós for Mattel Studios.
In a statement, Mattel Studios’ President and Chief Content Officer Robbie Brenner praised Jon M. Chu, saying he excels at crafting immersive worlds with a unique perspective, making him perfect to bring Hot Wheels to life. Brenner highlighted Chu’s ability to balance visually stunning films with compelling narratives, and believes pairing him with writers Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier will capture the essence of the iconic brand.
