Nigerian actress Iyabo Ojo recently spoke about her interaction with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after being questioned about the act of spraying money at her daughter Priscilla’s wedding. The EFCC presented her with footage from the event, showing guests spraying both naira and foreign currencies.
She was informed that such actions, including spraying money on people, are prohibited by Nigerian law. She expressed surprise, as she was previously aware only that defacing or mutilating currency was illegal. After the interview, she was allowed to leave, with her lawyer present in case further follow-up was needed. Ojo has since urged Nigerians to reconsider the tradition of money spraying to avoid any potential legal consequences.
The EFCC has stepped up its efforts to tackle currency abuse, especially the spraying of both naira and foreign currencies at social gatherings. This move is in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s broader efforts to safeguard the integrity of the national currency.
