You know those movies that don’t scream for your attention but somehow stick with you for days? That’s exactly what happened with “Am I OK?” and honestly, I wasn’t expecting much going in.
Dakota Johnson plays Lucy, a woman in her thirties who’s having what you might call a very delayed sexual awakening. She’s been best friends with Jane (Sonoya Mizuno) forever, but when Jane announces she’s moving to London, Lucy’s whole world gets shaken up. Suddenly, she’s questioning everything, her job, her friendships, and oh yeah, whether she might be gay.
What I love about this film is how it doesn’t treat Lucy’s journey like some big dramatic revelation. Johnson brings this beautiful vulnerability to the role without ever making it feel performative. You genuinely feel for this woman who’s been sleepwalking through life and is finally waking up. The friendship dynamic feels so real, it hurts. We’ve all had that friend who’s moving away right when we need them most.
One of the lines that stuck out the most is when Lucy said, “I’m 32 years old, I should have figured this out by now!” That moment of frustration hits like a truck because we’ve all been there, realizing you’re supposed to be a functioning adult, but you’re still figuring out the basics.
Sure, it’s not groundbreaking cinema, and some of the supporting characters feel a bit thin. But there’s something refreshingly honest about how messy and confusing figuring yourself out can be, even when you’re supposedly a grown-up. The film doesn’t rush to tie everything up in a neat bow, which I appreciated.
It’s the kind of small, intimate story that reminds you why we need more films about regular people going through regular (but important) stuff. Worth the watch, especially if you’re in the mood for something genuine.
Where to watch: You can stream it on Max (HBO Max) or rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, or Vudu if you don’t have a Max subscription.
