Mark Ruffalo is set to star opposite Ruth Madeley in the Apple Original Films pic Being Heumann, with CODA director Siân Heder directing. The film is an adaptation of Judy Heumann’s bestselling memoir.
Being Heumann follows Judy Heumann’s pivotal role in the 1977 occupation of San Francisco’s Federal Building, where she and over 100 activists staged a 28-day sit-in demanding enforcement of Section 504, a landmark disability rights law. Mark Ruffalo will portray Joseph Califano, the U.S. Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare at the time, in this powerful story of advocacy and community.
Her life was marked by both challenge and triumph. Tragically, after contracting polio at 18 months, she faced even greater obstacles, including being forced to use a wheelchair and enduring discrimination, notably being barred from public school due to being labeled a “fire hazard.” All these experiences fueled her advocacy for disability rights, leaving a lasting impact on the community
The production team for ‘Being Heumann’ includes producers David Permut and Kevin Walsh, with John W. Beach and Kevin Cleary joining, and executive producers Judy Heumann, Kristen Joiner, and Diana Pokorny, as Sian Heder and Rebekah Taussig write the screenplay.
The film is set to leave a lasting impact on viewers, challenging them to reflect on their role in shaping a more inclusive and equitable society.
