Nollywood actress Bukky Adekogbe Raji, widely known by her stage name Aminatu Papapa, has publicly expressed deep regret for supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during Nigeria’s 2023 general elections. In a candid and emotional interview aired on Oyinmomo TV in June 2025, the actress described her involvement in Tinubu’s campaign as “one of the biggest regrets of my life.” Fighting back emotion, she offered a heartfelt apology to Nigerians, particularly to those currently struggling under the weight of economic hardship. She pleaded for their forgiveness and acknowledged the pain many citizens are enduring.
Aminatu clarified that her support for Tinubu was sincere and not driven by financial incentives. She explained that her admiration stemmed from Tinubu’s previous achievements as governor of Lagos State and the compelling promises of his “Renewed Hope” agenda. She believed he had the experience and vision to lead Nigeria out of economic turmoil. However, after nearly two years under his administration, her hope has turned into profound disappointment. She cited rising inflation, a weakening naira, soaring food prices, and widespread poverty as evidence that the administration has failed to live up to its promises.
Her sentiments are not isolated. Veteran Yoruba actor Ganiu Nafiu, popularly known as Alapini Oosa, has also voiced his disappointment. According to him, he and other actors worked tirelessly during the election period, campaigning in various communities and believing that their efforts would lead to meaningful change. He lamented that despite their dedication, they received no recognition, support, or benefits from the government. Instead, he said, they now feel used, abandoned, and betrayed by the very administration they helped bring to power.
Similarly, other Nollywood personalities such as Ronke Oshodi-Oke and Fatai Adekunle Odua—famously known as Lalude—have publicly criticized the Tinubu administration. They expressed their dismay over the unmet campaign promises and the lack of attention to the needs of the common Nigerian. Many also pointed to unresolved grievances stemming from past events, including the EndSARS protests, arguing that the government continues to neglect the voices of the people.
This emerging wave of remorse among Nigerian entertainers reflects a growing disillusionment within the creative industry and beyond. Many celebrities had high hopes for President Tinubu, believing that his leadership would usher in a period of economic growth, better governance, and improved social welfare. Instead, they are now confronting a harsh reality where those expectations remain unfulfilled and citizens bear the brunt of economic mismanagement.
More importantly, some of these actors are now holding themselves accountable. They recognize the influential role they played in shaping public opinion and admit that their endorsements may have contributed to the electorate’s decision.
As dissatisfaction with the administration continues to grow, the voices of once-supportive entertainers now serve as a poignant reflection of national frustration and a warning about the consequences of misplaced political faith.
