Nigeria has etched its name in global history as five resilient readers successfully completed a 431-hour, 31-minute, and 25-second reading marathon, setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest continuous read-aloud session. Hosted by Naija ReadFest in Lagos, the event wasn’t only about chasing a world record. The event took place from August 12th – August 30th 2025 (lasting for 18 days). It was about celebrating Nigerian authors and reigniting the culture of reading and inspire a stronger reading culture nationwide.

 

Preparations for the Guinness world record attempt

The marathon didn’t happen overnight. Organizers spent months preparing schedules, securing a venue, and ensuring compliance with Guinness World Records’ strict guidelines. The five participants Precious Ukachi, John Obot, Stephen Oyelami, Temitope Ogunremi, and Ketura Heman trained for stamina, voice control, and concentration.

Books were carefully selected from Nigeria’s rich literary catalog, ensuring that every page read highlighted the country’s cultural and creative brilliance. Rest breaks, medical checks, and supervision were strictly monitored to keep the marathon legitimate.

If approved, this achievement will secure Nigeria’s place in the literary world spotlight.
