Sergio Peris-Mencheta, known for his role in Snowfall, has been cast as the villain in El Tigre, an R-rated comedy starring comedian Tom Segura in his first leading film role.
Details about Sergio Peris-Mencheta’s character remain under wraps, but the film’s plot is clear. El Tigre, currently filming in New Mexico with support from Double Down Pictures, follows Jeff (played by Tom Segura) and his friends on a Mexican adventure that takes an unexpected turn. When Jeff’s uncanny resemblance to the notorious cartel leader El Tigre is discovered, he’s caught by rival forces and later rescued by El Tigre’s loyalists. With his friends still in danger, Jeff must convincingly play the role of the ruthless El Tigre until he can devise an escape plan and find his way back home.
The film boasts an ensemble cast, including Luke Wilson, Tim Baltz, Genesis Rodriguez, Arturo Castro, Harvey Guillén, Raul Trujillo, Frankie Quinones, and Kirk Fox, joining Tom Segura and Sergio Peris-Mencheta.
El Tigre has had a lengthy development process, spanning 13 years. Originally based on a spec script by first-time writers Aaron Buchsbaum and Teddy Riley, it was initially set up at Sony with Mosaic producing. However, it faced significant delays and remained stuck in development until Tom Segura revived the project. Notably, Segura’s iteration, directed by Tyler Cornack, was first reported on in June.
