Sony Pictures is reviving one of the ’90s most beloved romantic comedies with a sequel to “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” enlisting Oscar-nominated filmmaker Celine Song to write the screenplay. Song, known for “Past Lives” and “The Materialists,” will pen the script, although she’s not currently attached to direct.

The choice of Song brings an intriguing creative direction to the sequel. As a filmmaker inspired by legendary screenwriter Nora Ephron, whom she calls the “queen of rom-coms,” Song may infuse the sequel with sophisticated romantic comedy sensibilities that made the original a classic.

Plot details about the sequel remain under wraps, leaving fans to speculate about how the story will continue nearly three decades after the original film’s release. Dermot Mulroney, who starred alongside Julia Roberts in the original, recently teased the potential follow-up, saying, “I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote.”

The original 1997 film starred Roberts as Julianne Potter, a woman who realizes she’s in love with her best friend Michael (Mulroney) just days before his wedding. The romantic comedy became a cultural phenomenon and a box office success.

The sequel is currently in early development, with no director or casting information confirmed. Industry observers suggest Sony might offer Song directing duties given her rising profile in Hollywood. Celine Song’s involvement signals Sony’s commitment to bringing a fresh perspective to the franchise while maintaining the emotional complexity that made the original resonate with audiences.
