Octavia Spencer is set to reprise her role as Sue Ann in a sequel to her hit horror movie Ma.
The Oscar-winning actress will star in Ma 2, though no other details about the upcoming sequel have been released just yet.
Blumhouse announced Octavia Spencer’s return for the “Ma” sequel.
The founder and CEO of Blumhouse productions Jason Blum said in a statement while announcing the sequel
“Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma,” he told Variety. “Ma likes to say ‘don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round.”
The first movie, directed by The Help‘s Tate Taylor, grossed more than $60 million at the worldwide box office off a reported $5M production cost.
It follows a lonely woman who befriends a group of teenagers and decides to let them party at her house. They affectionately called her “Ma” Just when the kids think their luck couldn’t get any better, things start happening that make them question the intention of their host.
The film has grown stronger theough the years,spawning various memes including parody posters and reaction images. Spencer even joined in on the fun in 2020, holding an online contest for the “best Ma meme” and awarding numerous prizes. In 2024, she referenced the film in a short video posted by the Kamala Harris presidential campaign.
The “Ma” sequel was unveiled by Blumhouse at Atomic Monster and its first-ever Business of Horror event in Hollywood.
