Mission Impossible - The Final Reckoning gets released at International Box Office Before Official Release

Ahead of its domestic debut next week, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning launched in select international markets this past weekend, receiving a strong reception in Japan, South Korea, and India — regions where Tom Cruise continues to enjoy enduring popularity.

The eighth entry in the iconic action series has already brought in approximately $11.5 million across just these three countries, following its premiere at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival. South Korea led with over $5 million in ticket sales, India followed with nearly $4 million, and Japan contributed more than $2 million.

The Final Reckoning is a direct continuation of 2023’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, which struggled at the global box office, earning around $570 million despite a hefty production budget estimated near $300 million.

In contrast, The Final Reckoning reportedly cost up to $400 million to produce, largely due to numerous delays and disruptions during filming. This makes it one of the most expensive films in history, placing immense financial expectations on Paramount. Based on standard industry benchmarks, the film would need to gross around $800 million worldwide just to break even — a milestone no Mission: Impossible film has reached. The franchise’s top earner so far is Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which grossed roughly $790 million globally.

Unlike Fallout, widely hailed as both the franchise’s peak and one of the greatest action films ever made, The Final Reckoning has drawn more muted reactions from critics. It currently holds an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes — the lowest for the series since 2007’s Mission: Impossible III.

The site’s critics’ consensus describes it as “Gargantuan in action, runtime, and scope, The Final Reckoning is a sentimental sendoff for Ethan Hunt that accomplishes its mission with a characteristic flair for the impossible.” Collider critic Ross Bonaime called it “the biggest, longest, and often, most ridiculous Mission: Impossible yet.”
